Emily Hainze

Emily Hainze is a PhD candidate in the Department of English and Comparative Literature, where she studies American and African American literature. She is also associated with the Institute for Research in Women, Gender and Sexuality.  Currently, she is at work on a dissertation entitled “Wayward Reading: Women’s Crime and Incarceration in the US, 1890-1935.”  Prior to graduate school, she worked as an investigator for the Civilian Complaint Review Board, the independent New York City agency responsible for investigating and prosecuting allegations of police misconduct.  Her work has been funded by the Council on Library Information and Resources, the Mellon foundation, and the New York Council for the Humanities.
