The National Institutes of Health has funded numerous INCITE studies on the autism epidemic. Since 2007, the NIH Pioneer Award program supported INCITE's Understanding Autism project, for which director Peter Bearman served as principal investigator. Publications arising from this project have focused on the spatial and temporal patterning of autism in order to better understand the sources of increased autism. They have considered the roles of parental age, diagnostic change, social influence, de novo mutations, reduced interpregnancy interval, and social and community factors associated with ascertainment, among others.

As of December 2013, INCITE has two active NIH projects regarding the autism epidemic.
