Abigail Coplin is a member of the 2010 PhD cohort in the Columbia Sociology Department.  Her research interests lie primarily in the sociology of contemporary China, political sociology, and the sociology of science.  Her current research investigates the rise of China’s agro-biotech sector in order to ask how innovative scientific research and knowledge economy are constructed in an authoritarian, technocratic state, with a particular focus on the role of transnational researchers in this process.  She is also currently working on a historical project that compares the evolution of the scientific career in China, France, and the US.  Prior to coming to Columbia, Abigail received a B.S. in East Asian Studies and Chemistry from Yale College and an M.A. in the Regional Studies of East Asia from Harvard University.  In her somewhat minimal free time, Abigail is an avid sailor and an aspiring molecular gastronomist.
